Become a Family Assistant through TFA
A Family Assistant keeps a family's household running. You guard the calendar, arrange what needs arranging and make sure the home looks cared for. Parents come home to a house where everything is in order.
It is a varied role for someone who thinks ahead, keeps an overview and works independently. Often you combine the household with care for the children.

What does a Family Assistant do?
You are the linchpin of the household. Where a Nanny focuses on the children, you look at the whole: the planning, the house, the groceries, the administration and everything that comes up in between.
- Keeping the family calendar and aligning appointments.
- Doing the groceries, keeping stocks up and cooking or preparing healthy meals.
- Taking care of the laundry, clothing and wardrobes.
- Coordinating appointments with suppliers, tradespeople and service providers.
- Organising travel, outings, birthdays and dinners.
- Supporting with administration and post.
- Sometimes directing other staff in the house.
- Collecting, taking and supporting the children where needed.
A day as a Family Assistant
You start with the planning: who needs to be where, what has come in and what is needed today. You do the groceries, move the laundry along and call the plumber. In between you prepare dinner and lay out what the children need to take with them.
Before you go home the house is in order, dinner is ready and the parents know what has been arranged. You see what is needed before anyone asks.

What we ask of you
- Experience in an organising or household role, for example as an assistant, in hospitality or in a private household.
- A sharp eye for detail and the habit of thinking ahead.
- Independence: you do not wait until someone asks.
- Discretion and a presentable, professional attitude.
- A driving licence, a certificate of conduct and preferably a first aid certificate.
- A good command of Dutch and often English as well.
- The wish to commit to a family for several years.
- A service mindset: taking work off a family's hands is your passion, it shows in your attitude and not just in your task list.
The difference with a Nanny and with domestic help
A Nanny focuses on the children, domestic help on cleaning. A Family Assistant sits in between and goes further: you keep an overview of the whole household and take on tasks that would otherwise land with the parents. Not sure which suits you? Read about becoming a Nanny as well.
Terms of employment and salary
You are employed by the family or the company, with a full employment contract. You are socially insured, you continue to be paid when ill and you are entitled to holidays and holiday pay.
The indication is between € 3,500 and € 4,500 gross per month based on 40 hours, depending on your education, experience and the weight of the role. Read more about the terms of employment.
Training and support
Before you start you follow the TFA Academy: our online training on the Family Assistant's field of work, family planning, discretion, hospitality and etiquette. After that you have a dedicated coach at TFA. Read more about the TFA Academy.
