Vacancy Nanny/Family Assistant | Utrecht | 30 to 36 hours | live in or live out

For a warm, active and internationally minded family in Utrecht we are looking for an experienced, independent and caring Nanny/Family Assistant. A positive professional who knows how to get things done, takes responsibility and enjoys contributing to a well organised and happy family life.

The family is two parents, two energetic boys and a girl of 3 months. After several years abroad the family is now settled back in the Netherlands. Both parents have busy professional lives and are looking for someone who brings calm, structure and continuity. Someone who does not wait to be asked, but sees for herself what is needed and takes the initiative.

The preferred start date is 4 January 2027. This is a role of 30 to 36 hours a week, spread over four or five days, with a flexible rota and the intention of a long working relationship. Both living in and living out are possible.

The role

As a Nanny/Family Assistant you combine the daily care, guidance and development of the children with practical and organisational support for the family. You provide a loving and safe environment in which the children can be themselves, discover new things and grow more independent. At the same time you keep an overview, bring structure and keep daily family life running smoothly.

The youngest girl goes to nursery four days a week and the two boys go to after school care two days a week. That leaves room, alongside the care itself, to pick up practical work independently, prepare meals and organise the household.

Within this family, clear boundaries, respect and independence are important values in raising the children. They are given room to develop, while also learning to take responsibility for their own behaviour and surroundings.

You are seen as a second pair of hands in raising them and are trusted to make decisions on your own. The family values someone who stands her ground, sets boundaries naturally and at the same time brings warmth, humour and good company.

What you will be doing includes:

  • Caring for and guiding the children, with attention for both the baby and the two boys;
  • Taking care of the morning routine, including breakfast, making lunchboxes and getting the children to school;
  • Taking the children to and from school, nursery and after school activities, on foot or by cargo bike;
  • Organising creative, sporting and educational activities, such as swimming, playing outside and outings;
  • Encouraging independence, good manners and a sense of responsibility;
  • Preparing healthy, varied meals for the whole family;
  • Light household work, including the laundry, folding clothes and clearing up after meals;
  • Doing the shopping and preparing and organising practical matters in the household;
  • Keeping an eye on the daily rhythm of the family independently, and creating overview and structure.

There is domestic help once a week. The emphasis of your role is on the children, preparing meals and organising and taking care of the daily work around the family independently. You know how to use the hours when the children are at school or nursery well.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced Nanny/Family Assistant with a warm personality, a positive attitude and a genuine willingness to get stuck in. You are reliable, responsible and enterprising. You sense well when children need structure and when there is room for spontaneity and fun.

You are someone who likes to roll up her sleeves, keeps an overview and gets energy from a varied working day. You combine loving attention for the children with a practical, independent way of working.

You also recognise yourself in the following:

  • You have several years of demonstrable professional experience caring for and guiding children, for example in private households, childcare or education;
  • You have cared for babies on your own and have relevant, checkable references;
  • You are independent and proactive, and see for yourself what needs attention;
  • You are well organised and happy to take on practical tasks in the household alongside caring for the children;
  • You are loving, calm and patient, and can also set boundaries;
  • You have a positive, cheerful attitude and bring a pleasant atmosphere;
  • You are flexible and comfortable with changing schedules;
  • You communicate openly and discuss any difficulties constructively;
  • You have a good command of English or Dutch;
  • You are willing to ride a cargo bike;
  • You have a valid residence and work status in the Netherlands;
  • You are available for a long working relationship.

Relevant work experience, a sense of responsibility, organisational insight and a natural way with children matter to this family.

Working days and flexibility

The role is an average of 30 to 36 hours a week, spread over four or five days. The family is explicitly looking for someone who can move flexibly with both parents' professional diaries.

Because the children are at school, nursery and after school care several days a week, the work alternates between caring for the children and practical support in the household. You can set your own priorities in that and organise your work well.

When one of the parents is abroad for work, there is a need for extra support. That is expected to be around five weeks a year. During those periods the working days can be longer, for example from 07.00 to 19.00, and occasionally a weekend day may be needed. These periods are planned well in advance.

The family values good communication and clear agreements, so that flexibility stays comfortable and workable for both sides.

Living in or living out

The family is open to both. For a professional who would like to live with the family, a spacious room with its own bathroom and toilet is available. That is an attractive option for candidates who want to move to Utrecht, or who would rather combine living and working.

Living out is equally possible, as long as you live within a short travelling distance of the family. The living arrangement and the practical agreements that go with it are settled together.

What makes this role special?

This family is looking not only for someone who takes on the daily care of the children, but for an all round professional who plays an important part in organising family life.

The combination of Nanny and Family Assistant makes this role particularly varied. You are closely involved in the children's development, and you also have room to pick up work independently and take things off the family's hands.

There is room for your own initiative, your own ideas and building a lasting bond of trust with the children. The parents place great value on working together in a way that is open, respectful and positive.

You have the freedom to think up activities, bring structure and contribute actively to raising the children. A fine role for someone who likes to carry responsibility and takes satisfaction in creating a warm, stable and well organised home.

What we offer

  • A role of 30 to 36 hours a week, spread over four or five days;
  • A gross salary indication of €3,800 to €5,000 based on 40 hours, pro rata for the hours agreed and depending on experience and qualifications;
  • A Dutch employment contract, pension, travel allowance and social insurance;
  • The option to live in or live out;
  • When living in: a spacious room with its own bathroom and toilet;
  • Around six weeks of paid leave a year, in line with the family's holidays;
  • The chance to take a Dutch or English language course;
  • A varied role in which caring for the children and practical family support come together;
  • Personal guidance and support from The Family Assistant.
